Knowing Yourself presents us with something any female bibliophile can appreciate- a strong female lead. Madame Megaera has the distinct pleasure of personally knowing the author of this book, Lisa Shea, and of having read (and often pre-read) many of the tales in this series. However, this IS among the first of books from the author, Lisa Shea, and Lady Fae has been given to understand that the subsequent books are decidedly longer and “even better” and can certainly understand not being supercalifragilistically amazing on first publications! It’s a nice, easy, story for a lazy day. That being said, she would have preferred a longer version of Knowing Yourself in order to have given the author more time to express the finer details of each characters’ personality and soul and subsequent interactions among each other. The Lady’s appetite for strong and extremely thoroughly developed characters- as well as details almost in excess of what many could consider a plethora- is rather large. She enjoyed the little spit fire that is Kay, but left feeling overall not quite satisfied. There is some mild violence and are adult themes throughout. All of the author’s proceeds from the sales of these books go to the benefit of battered women’s shelters, making these tales not only an enjoyable read, but a philanthropic one as well.

While each of the books in this collection can be read as a standalone, you can read them in order to follow the path of the legendary and mystical Sword of Glastonbury. Knowing Yourself is the first book in the Sword of Glastonbury series. Kay’s decision will effect not only her life, but the safety and well being of her home and all who remain under its protection. Knowing who to trust and who to depend on becomes ever more important as the threat grows near. This pleasurable pastime takes on a much more serious undertone when invaders threaten her beloved keep.
